What ARS is
The African Research Society is a youth-led, Africentric non-profit advancing student research across Africa and its diaspora. In a few years it has grown from a student initiative at the University of Cape Town into a continent-facing research movement — convening Nobel Laureates, running hands-on lab experiences, and connecting thousands of students to research and mentorship.
The framing matters as much as the work: an Africentric, youth-led society producing solutions anchored in African realities, rather than research about Africa done elsewhere. Support becomes programmes with names, dates and participants — not overhead.
Programmes
Our flagship inspiration series brings Nobel Laureates to African students. The 2024 edition featured Prof. Joachim Frank at UCT. Five Nobel Laureate speakers have featured across ARS events.
A six-month mentored program connecting undergraduate students with researchers and supervisors to conduct real research. A practical on-ramp into the research world.
Hands-on laboratory exposure — medical and science students shadow postdocs and PhD researchers for a week, run with UCT partners. The most recent edition was the 2026 Winter Lab Camp.
A multi-day, interdisciplinary gathering in development — convening science, technology, culture, and policy around how to build healthier, more resilient African societies.

ARS is backed by 40+ institutions across the continent — that figure is the size of the network. The organisations named below are different: they are collaborators we have worked alongside directly on programmes, events and training. They are a named subset of that backing, never an addition to it.
How funding is used
Every partnership is scoped in writing against a named programme, so a funder knows what their support paid for and when it ran. Support is directed at the five destinations below.
Route 01
Cash support for a defined programme, event series or student cohort, scoped with you and set out in writing.
Route 02
Laboratory access, venues, equipment, travel or expert time. For hands-on programmes this is often the most useful thing a partner can give.
Route 03
Multi-year work: co-designed research training, joint calls and apprenticeships that feed talent towards your institution or sector.
